Take Care of Your Brain with Brodo

Our brains weigh about 3 lbs on average, however they use about 20% of the total energy in our body! Needless to say, it’s an extremely important organ and it’s essential to prioritize brain health.

Any given organ has a role to play, but ultimately they’re all controlled by the brain. So when it comes to brain health, there are numerous different factors to consider: cognition, mental health, memory, sensation, rest, and so on. Since the brain is in charge of a very diverse array of functions, it requires a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients.

Today’s Mental Health Challenges

Screen time. Sedentary lifestyles. Social media. Ultra-processed foods. Toxins in the environment. These are just a few of the reasons neurodegenerative diseases, ADHD, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues on the rise. These things can be extremely difficult to avoid in our society, so it’s becoming more and more important to take care of our brain health.

Add in the fact that humans are living much longer than our ancestors did, and it becomes easy to see why we would want to take steps to remain active, sharp, and happy.

Fortunately, Brodo covers a lot of bases when it comes to brain health!

Brain Health-Enhancing Nutrients in Brodo

Water – Our brains are made up of about 73% water, so it’s crucial to get plenty of it! Bone broth consists mostly of water, which serves to hydrate us as well as pull all the nutrients and flavor from the bones, vegetables, and aromatics in our broth.

Sodium – Believe it or not, sodium is an essential nutrient for brain health. Without it, we’re susceptible to headaches, seizures, fatigue, lethargy, and even cognitive impairment. Sodium is also an important nutrient for conducting nerve impulses. Since processed foods contain too much sodium it is often demonized, but don’t make the mistake of confusing the mineral-rich sea salt we use to season our bone broth with the iodized salt of obscene quantity that’s found in a bag of chips.

Potassium – This important mineral helps our brain cells communicate with each other, along with cells further away in the body. It also helps with nerve firing. Lack of potassium can manifest as brain fog and muscle cramps, and eye twitching.

Glycine – This amino acid is an important sleep regulator, neurotransmitter, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory (a substance that stimulates or suppresses the immune system and may help the body fight cancer, infection, or other diseases).

Glucosamine – An important nutrient for cognitive function, glucosamine can help protect against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Of course, glucosamine can also help our joints which allows us to stay mobile, which plays an important role in overall cognitive function and brain health.

Alanine – Known for helping to improve focus under stress, this amino acid is a favorite for athletes and scholars alike. Broth also includes histidine. In your body, these two amino acids combine to form carnosine, an important antioxidant for muscle and brain tissue.

Arginine – This amino acid enhances communication of messenger cells between nerves and the brain. It also suppresses oxidative damage in the brain, resulting in slowed aging.

We at Brodo are proud to offer nutrient-dense bone broth which can help our brains stay happy and healthy throughout our lifetime. We believe that when healthy choices are also delicious, that makes it easy to our eating goals.
