Meet Our Smoothie: Veggies + Fruit + Bone Broth = Time To Rethink Your Drink

Wait, bone broth in a smoothie? Yup. Hear us out for a second.

The allure and convenience of getting nutrition in a cup has driven a dramatic rise in fresh juice and smoothie consumption over the last decade. However, people are waking up to the fact that juicing can strip away fiber while leaving behind incredible amounts of sugar. Worse, many smoothies on the market today have added sugar, usually delivered in healthy sounding forms like “raw honey,” “dates,” or “local maple syrup.” It is not uncommon to see smoothies with over 40 grams of sugar — that’s the equivalent of about 10 teaspoons in every cup!

Another challenge with juices and smoothies is that they rarely contain the good quality fats that your body needs to absorb fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K. In an effort to get even more out of our cup, many of these drinks also add powders and supplements that are highly processed. Lastly, most refrigerated juices are subjected to pasteurization or high-pressure processing, which we believe erodes their nutritional benefit.

These flavorful, nutrient-dense cold beverages are blended to order and feature a combination of vegetables, fruits and seeds bolstered by the natural collagen protein and amino acids of bone broth. There has never been a smoothie with quite the macro-nutrient profile as these Brothies. Each one comes loaded with vitamins and minerals, good-quality fats, and deeply colored phytonutrients. “All of the chemicals in plants that provide color are sought-after because of their anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory properties,” explains Marco, who was inspired by the idea of “eating the colors of the rainbow.”

Sure, it might sound weird, but we believe these bone broth-based smoothies make a lot of sense, both from a nutritional standpoint and in terms of taste. After all, the culinary world has a longstanding tradition of great-tasting meat-and-fruit pairings (think turkey and cranberries, pork and apples, duck and cherries). And in the case of the Brothie, the rich taste of Brodo chicken bone broth really takes a backseat to all the strong fruit and veggie flavors, like juicy blackberries and herbaceous fresh-cut parsley. “You hardly even taste the chicken broth,” says Marco.

Though subtle in the overall taste, the chicken broth brings a bevy of good things to the mix, including a hearty dose of protein — up to 13 grams in every Brothie. A lot of other smoothies will boost their protein count with a scoop of powder, usually made from whey.  Whey is a highly processed dairy product that contains protein, but not collagen protein. Collagen is good for healthy hair, nails, skin, bones, joints, and tendons — that’s the kind of protein you get from drinking a well-made bone broth like Brodo.

Every Brothie also includes a full tablespoon of nutritious seeds, such as chia, flax, and pumpkin, and 2 teaspoons of coconut oil for extra protein and heart-healthy fats, so all of those fat-soluble vitamins can actually be absorbed into your body.
