Brodo for Special Diets

For the vast majority of people on this planet, Brodo would be a great addition to the diet. It provides vitamins, minerals, protein, electrolytes, amino acids, and other nutrients without sugars, preservatives, or any common allergens. It’s easy to digest and best of all, it’s delicious!

If you need to avoid certain foods due to allergies, a recent surgery, pregnancy, or even fitness goals, chances are there’s still room for Brodo within your allowable food choices. Let’s break down some of the more popular diets and see how Brodo fits in:

Brodo as a part of a healthy diet

Diets that Work with Brodo

Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean Diet is characterized by lots of vegetables, a moderate amount of protein, whole grains, beans, herbs, and.plenty of olive oil. One of the main reasons it continuously ranks high in popularity is its sustainability. People find it easy to stick with this diet because it allows for a wide range of foods, unlike many other diets which can be restrictive. Brodo is a perfect addition to this diet because it’s a perfect accompaniment to recipes using beans, vegetables, and whole grains. In fact, our founder Marco Canora is an Italian chef who has written lots of great Mediterranean Diet-friendly recipes

Intermittent Fasting

While not a diet per se, intermittent fasting has become a popular way of eating. The general concept is to consume all of your calories for the day within a small window in order to allow the body to focus on other processes such as fighting off disease, regulating hormones, reducing inflammation, sleeping properly, and even thinking clearly. There are many different styles and opinions on how to do it right, but Brodo can always be consumed within the eating window and some even consider it to be ok to drink during the fasting period since it’s hydrating and very low in carbohydrates. We have even talked at length about this with a registered dietitian

Ketogenic Diet

The Ketogenic (aka Keto) diet is a low-carb, high-fat, moderate protein diet which is controversial, but has its diehard fans due to its ability to aid in fast weight loss. We highly recommend this keto-friendly latte with ghee.

Post-Surgery/Chemotherapy Diets

Bone broth can be a godsend to those who are recovering from surgery and/or chemotherapy. It’s nutrient-dense, easy to digest, hydrating, easy to stomach for those suffering from nausea, and best of all – it’s comforting and tasty! We receive a lot of gift orders from caring people who want to take care of their loved ones as they recover, and we love to be a part of the healing process. If you have a loved one who is recovering from surgery, illness, or chemotherapy, here are some creative ways to offer support with Brodo.

Flexitarian Diet

The Flexitarian Diet is a mostly-vegetarian diet which allows wiggle room for the occasional animal-based food. It tends to be for people who strive for a vegetarian diet (usually for ethical reasons) but know that it’s more sustainable to stick with it when they allow themselves a bit of meat, dairy, and/or eggs.. Brodo is great for this diet because it provides a boost of animal protein but it’s made with parts of the animal that would normally go to waste. We also source our meat and bones from small farms that practice ethical and sustainable farming methods.

Paleo Diet

The paleo diet is one that is characterized by foods that were eaten prior to modern agriculture. This includes meat, eggs, fish, fruits, and vegetables – and usually excludes grains, legumes, dairy, and overly processed foods. While the paleo diet can often leave room for interpretation, Brodo easily fits into this diet however you define it.

Whole 30 Diet

The Whole 30 Diet is an elimination diet which avoids sugar, alcohol, grains, and dairy. Some traditional Whole30 dieters also eliminate legumes and soy. Not only does Brodo avoid all of these things, it can help soothe your cravings! This is why it’s officially Whole 30 approved. Check out our Whole30 beef noodle soup!

Gluten-Free Diet

While Brodo is not technically a gluten-free certified food, we don’t add any gluten-containing ingredients and we take painstaking care to avoid gluten contamination in our bone broth. For people with Celiac disease, they might want to avoid Brodo until we can get certified gluten-free, but for people with milder reactions, Brodo is a solid choice.

Colonoscopy Prep Diet

We get a lot of questions about whether Brodo is appropriate for a person preparing for a colonoscopy. Our broth does indeed fit the definition of a “clear liquid,” but feel free to bring the list of ingredients to your doctor for the official signoff. You can find the list of ingredients on any of the individual product pages!

Diets for Pregnancy and Postpartum

Bone broth is very a popular choice for pregnancy and postpartum, for good reason! It’s easy to digest, good for morning sickness, and provides important nutrients. The only problem is that there are many inauthentic options out there which are basically just watered-down concentrate with added collagen powder. Brodo uses only real food ingredients that provide exactly what the body needs when preparing for and recovering from having a baby.

Diets to Accompany Your Workout

At Brodo, we think protein powder and sports drinks are overrated! Not only do they tend to be loaded with sugars and processed ingredients, but often you don’t really know what’s in them. Brodo is a low-carb, high-protein food that is perfect before or after a workout. It’s hydrating, it aids in muscle recovery, it helps build muscle, and helps you get the sleep you need to go back at it the next day. It’s also perfect as a snack between meals and can even be a light meal in itself. Read more here about how high-profile athletes are increasingly reaching for a hot mug of bone broth.

Diets that May or May Not Work with Brodo

FODMAP Diet

The FODMAP diet is intended to be a temporary diet to determine which foods a person is allergic, intolerant, and/or sensitive to, in order to reduce inflammation. It’s extremely restrictive, but over time foods are slowly and individually re-introduced to see if a reaction occurs. Brodo does contain onions and garlic which are off-limits but only until they’re ruled out. We cook the onions and garlic, which may make it easier to digest for some people with digestive issues.

Vegan/Vegetarian Diet

We do carry a delicious Seaweed Mushroom broth which is very popular with vegans and vegetarians, however unfortunately we have had a tough time sourcing the ingredients. We hope to bring this vegan option back soon, however!

What’s Right for You?

While we designed Brodo to be a healthy food for almost everyone, only you can decide what’s right for you. We aren’t here to push any particular diet – we’re just here to provide a food that’s healthy, delicious, and sustainable in a world where those choices are becoming fewer and fewer. If you’re working with a healthcare provider on a particular diet, let us know if they request any information!
